Kala namak, or black salt, is a naturally occurring mineral salt traditionally used in Indian cooking for its pungent, sulphurous aroma and distinct umami flavour. It’s commonly added to chaats, raitas, chutneys, and cooling summer drinks like jaljeera.
Compared to regular table salt, kala namak contains trace minerals and compounds like iron and sulphur, which may support digestion and reduce bloating. It’s also lower in sodium per pinch due to its strong taste, which means you often use less.
However, kala namak is still a form of salt, and like all sodium sources, it should be used in moderation. Excess salt intake, regardless of type, can contribute to high blood pressure and kidney strain over time.
Smart ways to use kala namak:
-
Use it as a finishing salt - a pinch over salads, fruits, or buttermilk adds flavour without overuse
-
Replace regular salt in chaats, raitas, and lemon water; its bold taste delivers more with less
-
Combine with cooling herbs like mint, coriander, and cumin to enhance its digestive benefits
-
Rotate with other mineral-rich salts like Himalayan pink salt for varied micronutrient intake
